Christmas for me has always been wonderful considering the fact that I was born on December 25. But I will live to treasure my 21st birthday which was celebrated at the Sheraton Hotel, Lagos. It was a surprise dinner organized by my parents. I felt on top of the world that day. It was the best Christmas ever.

I was also raised with a lot of fighting between mum and dad. Around the holidays, there was just more tension, more problems, more bills to pay and as such, more fight. One Christmas when I was around 11 or 12, I had got a green army tank that I wanted. It had a wired battery operated remote control. I was playing with the tank and having the time of my life, when, I just stopped, and realized, it was totally quiet. No arguing, no screaming, nothing. I had got everything I wanted physically but more than that I had got something I had been wanting since I was old enough to know better – good Christmas. I could hear mum laughing on the telephone. Dad was busy in the kitchen cooking. All the kids were playing or doing something. For the first time since I could remember everyone was getting along on Christmas. I had got something special. I had got a Christmas miracle. I never forgot that day to this day. That never happened again at home. But that was my most memorable Christmas.

I can never forget the year 1976 when I was still a boy. Ours was a very poor family as we lost our dad when I was just three months old. We struggled to eat. My mum, a petty trader was the breadwinner of the family and eating was a problem not to talk of buying cloths. My mother did the magic and that Xmas, he bought new clothes for us. It was great, who are you to touch or smear that cloth. I felt like a king although the cloth was a second hand material. I was so excited that a night before Christmas I used my cloth as pillow to ensure that it would be there by the time I woke up. It was beautiful.

My most memorable Christmas was in 2004. I had been through a very nasty divorce seven years prior and had spent the next seven years in depression, sadness, and regret. All of that manifested itself in a cocaine addiction that cost me my children, my house, my business, and everything else that I owned.
I was sitting on a cold, concrete floor in a homeless shelter on Christmas eve after living on the streets for a couple of years. It was that night that the Lord spoke Proverbs 3:5 and 6 straight to my heart. Those words pierced my very soul and the next day I was accepted at an eight-month Christian Rehab. I had eight straight months to do nothing but study God’s word and it has had a life-changing impact on me.
I know this sounds like a sad story but I tend to disagree. You see, I received the greatest gift that one could ever receive that Christmas – the gift of Jesus Christ Himself. It is definitely the most memorable Christmas I have ever had.

My most memorable Xmas was in 1979. Unlike the other years, I received a lot of gifts ranging form clothes, biscuit, sweet and gum from uncles and aunts that visited the village. It was so unusual, there was a lot to eat and drink.

Mine was in 1996, then it was a tradition to travel home for Xmas every year. That year I had gone to the stream to fetch water with my cousins. They suggested that we should swim before going back. I agreed although I never knew how to swim. The river swept me off with my cousins shouting and swimming after me. We saw ourselves in another part of the village. I felt like I was in a film as we had to wander into the bush, got a lot of cashews and pears. We wondered into the thick forest till a man started shouting that we were thieves. We ran for our dear lives and swam across the river again. It was risky but fun.

I will live to treasure the year 2006 as it was the year that I was given a title alongside my wife in Imo State. There was lot of merriment, I had to dance around with my regalia which was specially designed from Italy. It was great, my friends came from all over the country for that historic event. I still look forward to such events maybe then I would be made the Eze of my community.

The Xmas of 2006 remains the one to remember when my entire family paid me a surprise visit. The nature of my job never gave me the opportunity of spending Xmas with the entire family. I was overjoyed when on that day I got home from church and discovered that my entire family had decided to pay me a surprise visit. I wept like a baby, there were lots of gifts to share and, of course, they came with food and drinks and it was merriment all through.

The most memorable day in my life was the year my closest friend finally got married. Her father had sworn that he would never consent to his daughter getting married to her heartthrob. It became so bad that the two had to elope and started their family without the consent of both families. They lived their lives and had three kids, before the father of the girl decided to accept him as his son-in-law. It was indeed a celebration of love and perseverance.

December 2006 is day that will forever remain fresh in my mind after years to come. It was the year, my elder sister gave birth to a bouncing baby boy after 10 years of marriage. She was loved by the family that the issue of barrenness affected everyone in the family. We all prayed that the good Lord would visit her. So, when the news came that she had put to bed, it was a celebration galore.

Xmas has always been fun for me but that of 2004 was the most memorable of all. That was the year we had a get-together with every member of my family, extended and in-laws. It was beautiful; the most exciting part of it was that it was organised in my father’s house as he is the eldest in his family.
Funmi Adeboye (banker)
My most memorable Xmas was in 1992 when the entire family travelled to the village at Gbongan in Osun State for the celebration. Being a teenager then, it was really fun meeting with extended families attending parties and making new friends. There was so much to eat as there was no issue of rationing. I felt bad when it was over. Till date I long for such beautiful days.

My most memorable Xmas was in 1972. Then I had just graduated from the university and got a job. I had always promised my mother that I would always be her husband ever since our father died if she wouldn’t take another husband. So, that year I felt like a husband and a father. I took the last penny I had to make sure that I provided everything needed for Christmas and I felt good about it.
Solomon Okere (security consultant)
The most memorable of all my Xmas was in 2005 when I was selected as the best and most hardworking employee. I worked with Marc&Mei and normally at the end of the year, a party is organized to celebrate and awards given to the most outstanding worker. I least expected the award, so I felt great when my name was mentioned.
Anulika Anozie (marketer)
I will live to treasure the year 2006 as it was the Xmas when I reunited with my boyfriend. We had met way back in our school days and like every relationship, we had our ups and downs. We had lost contact for years till I travelled home for Xmas that year. I was hanging out with my friend in the village when he sighted me and shouted my name. We got talking again and promised to forget whatever it was and I tell you, the fun doubled. Today, he is my husband.
Lawal Audu (policeman)
That was the year 2004 when I moved into my new house in the village at Idah, Kogi State. Everyone in the family was there – my father, mother and siblings. It was a great period, there was so much to eat and drink.
