Lagos State University, Ojo, has said it will begin its second semester examinations for the 2008/2009 academic session on Monday, 14th December 2009 the News Agency of Nigeria reports.
This was contained in a statement by the Registrar, Mr. Oluwatoyin Oshun, in Lagos on Thursday.
Also on Thursday, striking workers of the institution agreed to suspend their industrial action.
In the statement, Oshun said, “The Management wishes to advise all students to obtain the university official bulletin dated December 3, 2009 for details on the revised 2008/2009 academic calendar.”
It also said the revision and registration processes that commenced last Monday would end on Friday (today).
Meanwhile, the striking workers said they would allow for the immediate commencement of academic activities, stalled since July.
Rising from a meeting, leaders of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and the Nigerian Association of Academic Technicians agreed to suspend the strike.
The unions in a statement said they had suspended the strike in response to appeals by well-meaning Nigerians.
The statement was jointly endorsed by Dr. K.O. Akinyemi (ASUU); Ms. F. I. Sessi (SSANU); Ms. T. A. Adegoroye (NAAT); and Mr. A. Y. Yakubu (NASU).
The workers, however, reiterated a vote of no confidence in the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Lateef Hussain.
The statement read, “Against the backdrop of the ongoing struggle at LASU and the reluctance of the Lagos State Government to take popularly acceptable decisions in line with the demands as regards the embattled VC, the staff unions have met and considered the appeals by parents, traditional rulers, clerics, well-meaning Nigerians and other stakeholders.
“We considered the future of our students, who are also victims of the VC, the need to create a conducive atmosphere for the visitation panel set up by government to investigate all the allegations for which Prof. Hussain has been indicted by the legislative arms of government in addition to sundry anomalies and irregularities within the system.
“We hereby resolve that the ongoing struggle be relaxed for normal academic and administrative activities to commence.
“We wish to reaffirm our vote of no confidence in the person and leadership of Prof. Hussain as the VC of the institution.”
