Google Releases 2009 Search Data for Nigeria

googleGoogle’s 2009 Zeitgeist has been released and offers a unique perspective on the year’s major events and hottest trends based on global searches.

According to the search company, Nigerians surfing the webs showed varied interests on education and online tools to international and local musicians, adding that the results reflected the growing importance of finding and sharing information online through search engines like google and offered a detailed insight into the trends and developments in Nigerians’ interests.

The search also showed the fastest rising searches dominated by local requests from Zain, Aero, Gani Fawehinmi and the Kwara State University. This, the company said, was a clear indication that local content matters to Nigerians and that Nigerians were absolutely passionate about music as the top celebrity search list was dominated by pop stars, including Nigeria’s popular R &B icon, Wande Coal with the American President, Barack Obama, as the only exception.

The search also revealed that the fastest rising searches were conducted on Facebook, Zain, Aero, and Opera, Yahoo mail, MTN, Michael Jackson, Gani Fawehinmi, my JAMB exams.com and Kwara State University sites.

Other results that emerged had Nigeria Yahoo, Facebook, Nokia, News, Mail Google as the most popular surfed sites.

Most searched outlets for information on Nigeria, according to it, were Zoom Nigeria, Guardian newspapers in Nigeria, Time in Nigeria, First Nigeria, and other notable newspapers in Nigeria.

Further results showed that the most sought out sites for Brand information include, FITC, Zain, Aero, Dana Air, MTN, Air Arik, BlackBerry, First Bank, DHL and Wema Bank sites.

In addition to informing on what people are curious of about Nigeria, Google Zeitgeist tools also offered insight into which topics were of interest across the globe. Top search terms from over 50 countries appear on out Google Zeitgeist webpage, google.com/Zeitgeist 2009.

These search terms, range from the one being conducted by political candidates in South Africa, to news searches in the United Arab Emirates and to electronic brand searches in Hong Kong.

The 2009 Year-end Zeitgeist offers a unique perspective on the year’s major events and hottest trends based on global searches, as well as searches conducted in Nigeria.
