Big Brother Africa Reality TV Show (4th Edition) Finals Tomorrow

For the first time in the history of Big Brother Africa reality TV show, a Nigerian is set to win the big prize. Indeed, as the curtain draws on the 4th season of the show tomorrow, there is the possibility that one of our own, Kevin, might cart home the grand prize of 200,000 US Dollars, the biggest ever reality show prize money in Africa.

For the finalists like Kevin and Nkenna from Nigeria, Emma from Angola, Namibian Edward and Mzamo from Malawi, the road to the finals has been rough and tough. 25 housemates had started the race three months ago, 20 had been evicted along the line, leaving only five in the grand finale. In fact, Kevin could be likened to the proverbial cat with nine lives with the way he escaped and survived four eviction landmines laid in his tracks by fellow housemates, most especially Edward, who saw him as a threat.

Though, at the beginning of the show, the 27 year-old graduate of English had boasted of his ability to stand out and survive any situation as a Nigerian. He never bargained for the intrigues and backstabbing that ran through the Big Brother house. Four times the Heads of House put Kevin up for eviction and four times he survived, proving the bookmakers right that he might be the one to pick the cash prize which has been doubled from the previous 100, 000 US Dollars.

It was Zimbabwean housemate, Itai who first put Kevin up for eviction when he swapped him and his comrade-in-arm, Elizabeth from Tanzania. Big Brother had introduced a twist to the game when the housemates were down to 16, which mandated housemates to play in twos. Should one be nominated for eviction, his/her comrade would suffer the same fate. Kevin was paired with Elizabeth, whom he later fell in love with. Itai had saved Kristal, his fellow countrywoman, who was paired with South African Quinn and replaced her with Elizabeth. Their first time on the firing line left them with the duo of Ethiopian Yacob and Ugandan Hannington. And after a week of anxiety, it was Hannington and Yacob that got the boots.

Itai’s action angered Kevin, who swore to take him out by all means. He waited patiently for the opportunity to take his pound of flesh. But danger was still lurking for the Jos indigene as the next Head of House, Mozambiquean Leonel, swapped him and Elizabeth for himself and Nzamo whom he had saved. The couple’s second time on the cross came when they were up against Quinn and Kristal. But it was the latter that left the house when it was time for eviction.

From that point onward, the housemates were liberated as Big Brother said they would no longer play as comrades but as individuals. And as if heaven had heard his prayer, Kevin’s countrywoman, Nkenna, won the Head of House, which made him to demand a favour from her to put Itai’s head on the chopping block. Nkenna refused, stating categorically it would be an act of disloyalty to put her former comrade-in-arm up for eviction. Itai had been nominated for eviction according to the plan of the alliance. This set confusion into the heart of Nkenna. Would she obey Kevin, her fellow countryman and put Itai’s head on the platter or save her former comrade-in-arm from the guillotine? But when Nkenna’s mind was made up, she saved Itai and replaced him with Emma whom love interest in the house, Kenyan Jeremy, was also up for eviction. Her explanation was to give Africa a twist. Kevin was mad and the compatriots kept malice for days.

With the comrade-in-arm twist rested, every housemate became vulnerable. Each pursued an agenda. Edward, whose twin brother, Erastus, and friends – Yacob and Hannington of the Smokers’ Alliance – were evicted earlier in the show, kept seeking revenge for each of them. And when he won the Head of House, his first target was Elizabeth, who took out Erastus. Elizabeth eventually got the boot, leaving Kevin heartbroken. As bad as the development was, viewers were unanimous in their opinion that Elizabeth’s eviction would help Kevin to focus on the big picture, which is winning the Big Brother Revolution prize. And it turned out to be exactly so as Kevin soon put Elizabeth’s departure behind him and concentrated on the game.

Eddy’s second coming saw him targeting Kevin because he considered the Nigerian a threat to his ambition of winning the prize. Kevin was up against Leonel, yet he survived. In the penultimate week to the final, Edward won the Head of House again, guaranteeing his position in the Top 5 and the finale. With only six housemates in the house after the exit of Nigeria’s Geraldine, the battle for the top spot became intense, and once again, Eddy saved Mzamo, guaranteeing her a spot in the final and replacing her with Kevin, his supposed arch-rival. While Edward, Nzamo and Nkenna coasted to safety thus securing their spots in the Top 5, Kevin, Emma and Itai’s fates hung in the balance. As the game turned out, however, it was Itai that left the Big Brother house last Sunday.

Now as the show cruises to the end, the question on the lips of most Africans is: who wears the big crown tomorrow? Though, the race would be tight between Edward and Kevin, most fingers point the way of Kevin to emerge winner. Undoubtedly, votes will be shared between Kevin and Nkenna, but given their individual performance, Kevin’s chances seem brighter. And with the love shown to Kevin across the continent, he is likely to emerge victorious, and achieve his life time ambition of creating an entertainment empire, the reason for which he entered the show. Meanwhile, young American rap star, Bow Wow will add to the excitement of the dramatic grand finale as he will thrill the audience at the show.
