LASU Crises: Workers Reject Gov’s Directive

Indications emerged on Wednesday that workers of the Lagos State University may defy the directive of the state government that academic activities must commence on Friday.

But some workers of the institution, who spoke with our correspondent, vowed not to obey the directive.

They said the government did not consult them before ordering the reopening of the institution.

The Chairperson of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, LASU Chapter, Ms. Funmilayo Sessi, who spoke with our correspondent on the telephone, said the state government did not consult with the workers.

She insisted that the announcement of the resumption by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Opeyemi Bamidele, on Tuesday came to them as a surprise.

She said, “We are not happy about the Lagos State Government’s decision because they did not consult or discuss with us.

“Anyway, we are going to meet on Thursday. Congress will hold to determine what we are going to do.”

The protracted crisis in LASU began on July 15, 2009, as the university had failed to resume for normal activities.

This was even after the Academic Staff Union of Universities had suspended its three-month strike.

The LASU crisis has gone beyond lecturers’ agitation for better working condition and upgrade of infrastructure as the local chapter of the Non-Academic Staff Union is demanding the removal of the institution’s vice-chancellor, Prof. Lateef Hussein.
